High definition digital versatile disk, HD DVD, is one of the next generation of optical media, Blu-ray being the other. HD DVD uses a shorter wavelength blue laser than the red laser used for standard DVD and CD technology it is possible to write smaller data pits in the same area and increase the disk capacity. Currently available as single layer 15Gb HD DVD-R write once disks. Future developments include rewritable 15Gb HD-DVD-RW and dual layer 30Gb HD DVD-R and HD DVD-RW. Current recording speeds are 1x the transfer rate being 36.55Mbps, two, four, six and eight speed disks are planned |
